Deficits, revisited PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 26 December 2016 23:25

President Obama just claimed he cut the deficit in half - a lie he's repeated often.  But what is a deficit?  It's spending above your income.  It's adding more debt to your current debt.  That's easy to track.  So let's take a look:

Constitutional Logic of the Left PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 17 December 2016 18:18

In an editorial today by the Los Angeles Times, "noted" (and yes, the quotations are intentional and in this case accurate as the argument he is about to make defies any logic or reason) Supreme Court journalist Kenneth Jost actually states, and tries to argue, that the Electoral College is unconstitutional.  Really - I am not making that up.

Congratulations President Elect Trump PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 08 November 2016 00:00

Congratulations to President Elect Trump, his beautiful and intelligent wife Melania, and the rest of the Trump clan.  You've proven that the concept of a citizen statesman can still exist in the US, one does not need to be a career politician to be elected to the highest office in the land.  Make America Great Again!

The latest "Deplorable" PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 18 September 2016 23:55

Hillary Clinton recently stated that half of Donald Trump supporters are deplorable.  Yes, because they are (choose one or more of the following): "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic — you name it".  Yes, "you name it" is included meaning anything.  But let's focus on the first, racist.  Hillary! (I like using her failed 2008 campaign imagery) continually makes statements about the supposed "denigrating comments Mr. Trump has made about Mexicans".  Hillary! has also states that wanting to build a wall is racist.  Well, I wonder what she thinks about her former boss, President Obama, now that he's given $75 million to Mexico to build a wall to keep Central Americans out of Mexico?  Will she come out and toss the President into the category of deplorables?

Real Tax Rates PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 05 September 2016 15:11

On another forum, a person was decrying the tax cuts we've had, and how they have created the increase in debt since 2000.  Is that actually the case?  Are tax rates down, and thus our debt is up?  Well, let's look at the historical record and see - how has tax revenue changed over time, and how has the deficit grown?

Liar Liar Pants on Fire (volume II) PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 15 June 2016 16:22

The White House is claiming that the country is safer today than it was 8 years ago.  A claim made to try to "strengthen" the image of our shrinking-violet President and his inability to secure or address terrorism.  Yes, with a straight face, the White House officially stated that "Our country is safer than it was 8 years ago".  Too bad for the White House that it is trivial to check the accuracy of their claim...

Orlando PDF Print E-mail

Orlando – 53+ killed, dozens more injured in an attack on a night club.

And no, it’s not the gun.  It’s Islam.

Listening to the talking heads this morning, after the horrific Islamic terrorist attack in Orlando, there is a growing move towards blaming the firearm and not the hateful, bigoted, intolerant terrorist Muslim who carried that firearm and pulled the trigger.  It would have been much easier for Mateen to simply make a few Molotov cocktails and burn the place down, inevitably killing many more.

A divergence into Religion PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 10 June 2016 16:30

On a forum I sometimes frequent, a thread was started about the age of Adam...  That led into a general discussion about faith and religion.  I posted that inherently things about faith and religion cannot be proven one way or another - it is faith, it cannot rely or deny facts.  I was challenged on my statement.  This is what I wrote, and I think is a pretty fair statement of my current thinking on religions and faith in general.  Take of it what you will!

President Obama's Iraq Success PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 29 June 2014 18:05

Back in 2010, Vice President Joe Biden was out on the media circuit trumpeting Iraq as "one of the great achievements of this administration".  The President has repeatedly called Iraq a victory, and proof that he alone knows how to work with foreign governments and leaders.  That the Obama Administration would bring peace to the Middle East and end the terrorist wave sweeping the region.  But what is going on now?

The emerging American Dictator, Redux PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 14 November 2013 17:30

Several years ago (just over 4, to be exact), I wrote a blog entry about our emerging American dictator.  Today simply confirms that President Obama has cemented that position, with his virtual rewrite of his signature, landmark, linchpin legislation, the PPACA - otherwise known as Obamacare.  Because of the abject failure of the website, the public began to delve deeper.  Because of the collapse of the website, the media could no longer ignore the failures of this Presidency - facts must come out.  And today, they did.

Liar, Liar - President Obama's Pants Are On Fire PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 27 October 2013 15:42

First we have this: Obama says NSA not spying on Merkel's cellphone - from October 23rd, 2013.

Then we have this: Barack Obama 'approved tapping Angela Merkel's phone 3 years ago' - from October 27th, 2013.

Mr. President - you lie.

It is one thing, Mr. President, to lie to the citizens who voted (either for or against you).  We are stuck with our mistake.  But to lie about foreign Government leaders, to destroy one of the best foreign relations we have is a serious breech of trust.  Mr. President - you are a liar.  You have no credibility.  Your "legacy" will be a destroyed economy, a wasteland of healthcare, and a tearing down of our foreign relations and standing in the world.

Mr. President - you are a liar.

How much is enough? PDF Print E-mail

Today, after yet another mass shooting (in California, on a college campus no less), there is renewed call for firearms restrictions.  In particular, ammunition capacity.  New York has limited firearms to no more than 7 rounds; many States (such as California) restrict capacity to 10 rounds.  There is much discussion on both sides, but what makes sense?  What is really the right approach?

The Bush Tax Increases PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 26 July 2011 08:07

Tonight, our President laid out his case for why the Congress should take his approach to solving the deficit with anything approaching seriousness.  To this point, the President has been adamant about not offering any details, just that the rich should pay more taxes, and that if we didn't have the Bush tax cuts we'd be in fine shape.  But that got me wondering - were there ACTUAL Bush tax cuts?

The Deficit in Perspective PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 14 July 2011 17:54

As the debt ceiling debate fills all available media time, much of it falls on talks of the deficit.  Deficit reduction is inherently tied to debt reduction)(or at least, debt management), for the debt is nothing more than the cumulative sum of all deficits.  Run a deficit, the national debt (and thus the required debt ceiling) increases; run a surplus and the debt falls.  To talk of the debt and ignore the deficit is impossible, for the debt is the child of the deficit.

Given this I thought it would be instructive to take a new look at just how big the deficit really is.  And I thought I would do it in a way I've never seen before.

The Death of American Capitalism PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 01 July 2011 00:26

Most here know that I am in manufacturing; specifically, I work in the audio field, designing, building, and selling loudspeakers - woofers, midranges, tweeters, that sort of thing. Those cars that drive by at night pounding out bass? That's my fault. Those ultra-loud concert and club setups? Guilty as charged. Yes, I design and build speakers for a living. And until 2007 I was doing it inside the US. But I stopped, for several reasons and moved overseas. And an action this week by a Federal judge - brought about because of the actions of the Federal Government against another manufacturer - brought it all back to light.

A Courageous President PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 16 May 2011 00:17

The current economic nightmare facing the US - deficits greater than any BUDGET prior to 1996, deficits greater than the GDP of Canada - is, in this author's humble opinion - the greatest threat to the nation at this time. It is not a social issue, it is not a foreign relations issue - it is purely economic in nature. If we do not get this situation under control, and do so within the next 2 years, it will not matter where we come down on social issues or foreign relations; the fate of the nation will be sealed and the demise will be assured. It will be slow in coming, but inexorable and unstoppable.

This is not the time for timid politicians; a President who shirks from the tough stand is to be abhored not lauded. What would I envision a courageous President would do? Read on on to find out...

The King is Dead... PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 08 April 2011 17:42

He had a good run, for nearly 70 years.  World domination, the most important in his circle.  What everyone else aspired to be. While ailing over the last few years, he still had vigor in him, was able to hold off the upstarts and retain his crown.  However, over the last 3 months the inevitable happened - the cancer growing inside him was too much, and alas - is now on life support.  His reign was historic, but appears to have come to rest as his minions have shown little willingness to raise him - or a successor - back to his prominence...  The King truly is dead.

The Obama Jobs Creation Myth PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 10 March 2011 01:20

On a thread at True Blue Freedom, a liberal member of TBF linked to a blog post that made the too-hard-to-believe (for rational people, at least) claim that "More Private Sector Jobs Created In 2010 Than During Entire Bush Years".

So I went digging, specifically from that blog's own source, the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And what did I find?

The Doctor Will See You Now, eh! PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 12 December 2010 16:46

The following is a guest commentary about one person's experience with the Canadian Health Care system, so often used as a model of efficiency and low costs, and what the US should seek to emulate - Shanghai Dan

Health care systems beware; Canada’s system is not all it’s made out to be. We don’t have Canadian government health insurance so we have to pay for everything, but that’s OK and we came on our mission expecting to do so. In fact, we haven’t been to a doctor for years except for a medical every year or two and we didn’t expect to need one on our mission. Wrong!

Hauser's Law and Taxes PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 28 November 2010 01:32

On a site I frequent, the recent article from Kurt Hauser came up and succinctly stated the empirical fact that the Federal Government gets about 19% of the GDP.  Higher tax rates don't increase the Federal Government's take; it still gets 19%.  So the focus for those looking to raise revenue (something that should be questioned strongly, and acted on only after spending is cut back significantly) should not be increasing taxes (since it doesn't work - Hauser's Law) but growing the GDP.  And as expected, a person on the political left simply couldn't understand the logic.  So I explained...

Deficit Reduction Redux PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 12 November 2010 00:17

Today saw the release of the draft proposal to deal with our insane deficit (currently around $1.3 trillion, but final numbers won't be available for a little while).  Just 4 short years ago, FY2007 saw a $162 billion deficit, and it's now 8 TIMES that level.  In FY2007 Federal receipts were $2.6 trillion, and for FY2010 they were about $2.2 trillion - meaning a $400 billion loss in receipts, considerably less than the $1.2 trillion bloom in deficit!  The deficit is now 10% of the total GDP - a level that is completely unsustainable for even a few years, let alone the decade that the Obama Administration is predicting.  Especially in light of the $13 trillion in total debt the US currently carries, and not including the estimated $50 trillion in underfunded long-term commitments (Medicare and Social Security).  So what did this committee suggest?  Read on...

Using Healthcare to Destroy Capitalism PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 18 October 2010 01:17

Healthcare - I've written about it before (here, here, and here), but now we see the true extent of the abomination that has become known as Obamacare in the way it will seriously cripple - if not outright destroy the engine that creates jobs in this economy, small business.  It comes from a little-mentioned-during-debate clause about that most innocuous of IRS forms, the 1099.  And it has the power to seriously damage our economy, not to mention be an insidious first step towards a VAT-style tax in the US.

Thursday, 23 September 2010 19:11

Summer of 2010 is in the books...  For at least the time I was here in Seattle (I was in Asia for 6 weeks), summer never seemed to arrive - cold, rainy, much more Fall than summer.  But no, this article isn't about weather (although that would be a much more entertaining and ultimately happier topic), it's about the wonderful Summer Of Recovery our esteemed leadership has wrought.

The Myth of High Speed Rail in the US PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 26 July 2010 01:14

There's a big push in some corners of the US transportation industry to "bring high speed rail to America". Visions of relaxed, latte-sipping trips over the nation, no lines for security, low cost trips are certainly heady ideas, but do they bear out? Let's take a critical, cold, calculating look at the reality of the situation.

Politics and the CBO PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 June 2010 06:23

The "independence" of the CBO has been a foundational claim of the Pelosi/Obama/Reid triumvirate as they continue to pitch ever-increasing expenditures and desired bills.  The CBO is above taint, it is independent, it can be trusted.  But can we really trust it?  Isn't it just a tool of Congress?  After all, the CBO can only do what Congress directs.  And we see that in it's latest "report", the CBO claims that the Middle Class--Not the Rich or the Poor--Pay Majority of Federal Taxes.  Wow, shocking, no?

The Myth of Peak Oil PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 02 May 2010 17:46

For decades, we've heard the call of "peak oil", that we're facing an ever-decreasing supply of oil.  The US simply cannot maintain it's current usage of oil because we are on the verge of a collapse of apocalyptic proportions because the last oil in the ground is being used right now.  Makes wonderful news copy, and is a great way to castigate the energy industry and justify entire reworking of the economy, but there's a problem: it's not true.
